View Full Version : BM Decklink - audio in/out

It would be really great if we could use audio input & outputs of the BM Decklink cards in Vidblaster.
Currently it is not available in the audio device list in VB. Works in some other applications.
Reference thread:

Don't we already have a request for this?
Unfortunately this (again) is relatively a lot of work as there is no DirectShow driver for the audio connections.

Mike,
the only request I found for it is the thread linked above, which is not posted as a feature request.
Too bad it's alot of work. It would be really neat to be able to skip extra sound cards and send the audio the same way as the video. I can understand if it's not on top of your list, however since the BM cards otherwise now are so well supported and integrated in VB, I think audio support for it at least should be on the list.
Is it only the driver for the video part in Decklink that is directshow?
For input, partially but required additional API work, output is only API. But of course that amount of work was more justified.

I think the request you were refering to might be an old one (actually even posted by me :)) concerning embedding audio on the SDI/HDMI outputs.
Thread can be found here:

I guess those thread could be merged if you like.

Could make this feature available only on the Broadcast version.

++++1, Oh would this make my life easier... We have situations where 3rd party news gatherers want to tap our signal. Sometimes up to three other ob-vans that wants a feed. A single SDI is what most of them expect so this would be very welcome.

+2 this would really aid in my efforts as a systems integrator and reseller

Should add to this thread that audio output (from players etc) through the audio cables on the Black magic cards actually work fine. Input and embedded audio does not.
So if you send audio out to the BM it does not embed this in the SDI stream? I would expect it does that by itself..

Hmm, actually I havent tried this, since it's only is available for players and RTSP-module. Will have to try and see. The request regarding embedding was for embedding the final audio that is input to the audio module.

I would expect it to work. I've just tested my BM Intensity Shuttle as both a Video Out device and as an audio device for a Player, and both the audio & video go down the HDMI connection to a monitor.

Then all we need is a way to route the audio module's sound to the BM... :)

I did try this, but with another software set to use the audio out. This did not embed into SDI. Will give it another go and see if I can make it work. That it works with HDMI doesnt surprise me, but with SDI I am doubtful as it has some other flavours to it.

Whooop, got it working :) What I did was to route my line in on the soundcard to the Blackmagic Speaker output. Opened the properties of my Line In and checked "Listen to this device" and then selected the Blackmagic device in "Listen with this device" :) Everything that comes into my Line In is now embedded in my SDI output :)
Writing a Wiki on it ;)

Wow! Good find Daniel!
Who would think it was that easy?
I still think it's a good idea with routable output(s) for the audio module though. Think upcoming built-in audio delay etc...

Good stuff! :) No reason why that shouldn't work on any of the Blackmagic Desktop devices, Intensity or Decklink, over SDI or HDMI, or analogue (if balanced audio is required).
Do I hear a new wiki entry coming up?

Do a search before posting ;) Its already there :)
I stand corrected, thanks! So if I wanted to add a note to that ("guess this is for Windows 7 only?") do I do that under Discussion??
I'm wondering where to put this audio out thing. Are we looking into a new Video Out module (AV Out?), a separate Audio Out module (route audio anywhere you like), or would it be part of the new mixer module?
I guess from a broadcast perspective, changing the video output module would be most logical. Confirmed by the fact that you do not have to select anything (output device is known, source would be selected in the audio module).

That would seem a good starting point. Although the Video Out might not be the video from the Program output, and therefore the associated audio might not want to be the same as that selected in the Audio module. I'd maybe keep it simple to start with, with just an On/Off option to take the feed from the Audio Module, and then wait and see how VidBlaster develops before suggesting further options. It's always possible to use Daniel's method to set up alternative audio routing to get audio from another source into the SDI/HDMI output.

I agree with Martin. Sounds like a good plan!

I know this is old subject. But I really need to be able to source audio input from Intensity pro card. I currently use 4 BM Intensity pro cards in our systems and I only need to source audio from the first card since all mixing is handled externally. As seen in the photo I give the option of connecting either 1/4 or RCA.

I'm not concerned about output since O.S. see this already.
I do know the the audio input BM card only become active if video is present.
