Hi Mike:

Looking at the VidBlaster Studio V.042 Beta, I see an SD NTSC 640 by 480 but no settings for common SD NTSC 720 by 480 ?

Cheers

PCs use square pixels, hence on a PC NTSC is 640*480. VidBlaster automatically resamples all video streams when necessary.

Okay, makes sense on the square pixels pc aspect ratio. So I should make presentation clips progressive and square pics instead of 720 by 480 so Vidblaster won't have to resample. I use Sony Vegas Pro 8c. Didn't know that VidBlaster Studio resampled on the fly that's very impressive!

It's always best to prepare videos and graphics in the same resolution as whatever you use in VidBlaster.

Yes, people sometimes complain the program is slow, but once you realize what's going on inside it's actually very efficient. A lot of time has been invested simply making it do the same but faster.

Now that I understand things better putting all my overlays and lower thirds at 640 by 480 does the trick nicely. I'm converting some of my industrial vid masters from standard DVD 720 by 480 to 640 by 480 and see how that all gels.

Okay after reading this I would still like 720x480. I understand that they are not square pixels, it doesn't matter to me. My final output will be a DVD, so I see no sense in having vidblaster downsize the cameras from 720x480 to 640x480 and then me upsizing them from 640x480 to 720x480 when burning a DVD later.
this is a simple thing right? adding it to the list of allowed resolution?

That mode would not display well in VidBlaster (= PC) as the aspect ratio will be off, i.e. the video will look flattened. Also it would not be a simple thing, as VidBlaster respects pixel sizes. So if you'd hook up a camera in DV mode 720*480, it would see the pixels are non-square, resize the video to square pixels (which would turn out to be 640*480), then notice current video is 720*480 thus centering the video with black borders on either side. I would have to disable all that just to force it to display a distorted image.

Your DVD burner should recognize VidBlaster's output uses square pixels, and convert the video back to 720*480. If it's not doing that, then that's a bug. I could overcome that by creating a save option in non-square pixels, eventually. Or maybe even a way to burn DVDs in VidBlaster itself? I have no idea what's involved, and if there would be any demand. No matter what, it deserves its own topic :)

Mike,

Your explanation about the resampling does not make sense to me. I want to record tv programs not just stream them.. I am currently using another video mixer app but yours has more options for the type of content that I do except taping to 720x480 and the ability to tape to another drive plus some audio issues i mention in another colum.

If I where able to select the drive where i would tape the content other than somewhere on the c drive and also record in 720x480 this would make you program viable not only for me but to all broadcast content producers.

When working with video at least as far as NLE the videos should goes on a separte drive not the c drive, this will affect the recording and the app respponse. DV loss will occur with this resampling

I see no reason that would hinder vidblaster from using a smaller reslution on the preview, program windows and then tape avi or mov 720x480. I could live with a smaller preview and program resolution but not with 640x480. Is it a licensing issue?

This topic is about why 720*480 seems to be missing. My explanation was not limited to streaming.
