View Full Version : I Can't Get Vidblaster To Recognize The GL1

I connected the GL1 via firewire to my i7 laptop. Usually I get some type of connection response when I connect any camera to my computer, but I got nothing. Then I opened up vidblaster and there's no GL1 to choose from.

So how do I get the Gl1 as a camera if Vidblaster doesn't recognize it. How did you do it in detail :)

David,

May be a sequence thing. Make sure PC is booted up, then plug in GL1, then turn on GL1. PC should then load drivers. Once drivers are loaded, start VidBlaster and the GL1 should show up as Canon DV cam. If this does not happen, look for a bad cable, a bad connection, etc. Please report back your findings.

Hope all else is well!

Before Vidblaster can recognise the GL1, Windows has to recognise it, so your first check should be in the Windows hardware Device Manager (via the Control Panel options). A DV/1394/firewire camera usually shows as an "Imaging Device" and should appear & disappear as you connect and disconect the firewire cable. If nothing happens in Windows then it's no surprise that nothing will appear in Vidblaster either - so don't blame Vidblaster!

If the camera doesn't appear in Device Manger then it could be the 1394 port on the camera, the 1394 port on the PC, the firewire cable, or a Windows driver issue (with the default 1394 & DV device drivers). With a chain of items (camera, cable, port & software), the best way of testing is via substitution. Try the camera on a different PC, try a different cable, or a different camera on this PC. That way you can spot the common denominator.

Did you try the the old driver "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)"?

David,
Not all (semi)professional cameras provide power over Firewire, which some Firewirecards assume, especially in laptops. I don't know the case re GL1.

Another path is of course getting the video into VidBlaster over composite/S-VHS.See the "Cameras" help section in VidBlaster.

Thanks everyone for the great support. I'm having trouble Getting Vidblaster to recognize the GL1 sound. I've got it to recognize the video through the firewire, but no sound. The only thing it recognizes is my external mic and external mic jack. If I put should through them it will not sync with the video.

Tom how did you get your audio to sync with your Gl1 video?

I'm afraid I can't be much help on this as I only run my GL1s on composite video since they may be 20-500 yards from my PC. I don't take audio from the cameras as they are typically mounted on top of a stadium press box or on the sideline. Only audio I get is from my announcers inside the press box.

The firewire/audio delay has been discussed here on the forum several times. A search on "firewire delay" brings 36 hits.

David,
Did you ever resolve the issue with getting sound from the GL1 camera? I don't think the VidBlaster app is configured to pull audio from the camera, it only gets it from the soundcard. Correct me if I am wrong.
