I see you're looking for other forum software options. Yay! I have to say I've been frustrated by a few things here but I didn't say anything because I know it's just SMF, which in my opinion isn't up to the job of running a serious forum.

Personally I recommend vBulletin. I've used it on a number of websites including a forum with over 1000 new posts per day. It's never missed a beat.

Akismet is included as an option in the vBulletin admin interface. I haven't used it myself and I can't really say how good the support is, but at least I can say it's definitely integrated. I've found the vBulletin support forum to be very good in general, although having said that, they do tend to avoid offering forum support for third-party products (which is probably fair enough).
