View Full Version : [closed] Optionally disable Overlay module for the recorder

I normally stream AND make a recording of live events. Quite frequently I would like to give the live audience info, e.g. "will be back in 5 minutes", that I don't want to get on tape - sorry - in the recorded file.
Would it be too difficult to add a right-click option in the Overlay module the clear/check "Disable this overlay in recordings"?
+1 from me.
This is what the TV-people would call a "dirty" and "clean" feed.
The dirty is with graphics like timing, telephone vote-numbers and so on.
The clean is usually without any graphics and used for editing at a later stage.

So how does that work Jakob? Would there be 2 Program monitors for instance?
In the bussess we work there are 40+ monitors. ;-)
Usually the producer watches the "dirty" feed.
The graphics are just omitted from the "clean" feed. This signal could be routed to a monitor "in the corner". Noboy watches that.
Most mixers also have an option to add something keyed on the signal after the program feed. This is usually called "down stream key". This could be used to add a logo in the corner on the transmission for example.
I think that we want to copy the "clean feed" option. A right-click option in the Overlay module is a way to accomplish this.

Jakob, just out of curiousity who do you work for?
Regarding down stream keyers I would say that they are more often used to add graphics, lower thirds etc pretty much the same way the overlays in Vidblaster works. The regular keyers in the mixers are mostly used for effects, a bit like the "Video Effects" in Vidblaster, but keyable. The big difference between the regular keyers and the downstream keyers is that downstream keyers are normally not added to the cleanfeed which the regular keyers are.
Anyway, I also think it would be excellent to be able to choose which overlays should go on the recording and which should not, but maybe it should even be done as a Clean module (a copy of the Program module but without the overlays). Then add the option to let the user choose which source should be recorded and which should be streamed. Available sources could be Program, Clean, Cameras, Players etc. This could also open up the ability to be able to add multiple streamers and recorders which then can be fed with different sources.
For example:
Recorder 1 is recording the Clean feed, Recorder 2 is recording Camera 1. Then Streamer 1 is streaming the Program feed and maybe Streamer 2 is also streaming the Program feed but in another resolution or format or maybe to another streaming network.
Sorry for the long post and I'm aware this made this feature request alot bigger (and perhaps even quite a bit off topic), but I think this is all in line with the modular thinking which we have come to love so much about Vidblaster and the flexibility would make the possibilities nearly endless where the quickly evolving hardware is the limit. Hopefully this has at least given you some new ideas Mike! :)
I have my own event production company in Karlstad.
URL in my profile.
And Jakob donīt forget your time with Junior ;)
+1 from me.
And it would be nice to have the option to have 2 streamers at once...

Regarding 2 streams...
Doesn't FME give the option for 3 simultaneous streams?
Regarding 2 streams...
Doesn't FME give the option for 3 simultaneous streams?
Sorry, I dident say, I use Windows Media Services 99% of the time... and the extra stream would then be som flashmedia...
And I think FME dosent support WMS Server, anybody know if it do ?
Please stay on topic Daniel. Start a new topic if you like.
Mike
What is your stand point in this, can we get into VidBlaster ?

grateful for anything that you (Mike) might perhaps implement with relatively low effort (instead of stall due to the ambition to develop something amazingly flexible and powerful)

Perhaps the UI of the Overlay module could be changed a little bit to accomplish this.
Replace the "On" "Off" buttons with "Rec" "Stream", either or both buttons up/down indicates where the overlay is going. The actual selection of (on/off) is still chosen by clicking the module.
Or, as Jakob says have a right-click option in Overlay module for "clean feed" - and then we must know which feed is clean (no overlay), the one recorded or the one streamed.
It's not that easy. VidBlaster is set up for one video stream, the stream. In order for this to work I need to allow 2 or more streams, and before I start such a major rewrite I want to have a better understanding of why one needs this and how. It's so important that I do this right that a new topic should be dedicated to this, discussing anything that relates to this. Obviously I won't start such a rewrite before there is a new stable version, as 1.07 is getting old fast. Right now there are 1 or 2 bugs (that I cannot reproduce) that needs to be fixed first, then a new release that hopefully is suitable to be an official release.

Mike, do I understand it right if you would like to see a new request topic on "Multiple streams" or "Multiple streams to enable clean feeds"? (I believe I motivated the need in the first post of the current topic).
Something like that. But not now, first I need to release VB.

For inspiration, attached is a screenshot on how "Clean Feeds" are assigned on a Grass Valley switcher. Cascade A-D in this example are separate outputs from the switcher, and you can easily choose which keys should go on what output.
I do understand this might not be easily implemented though, but it would indeed be extremely useful!
